Puffer fish:

  • There are over 190 different species of puffer fish.
  • They don’t have scales or spines.
  • They have teeth.
  • They have strong jaws.
  • They are poisonous.
  • They have two upper teeth and two lower teeth, both sets fused together to form a pointed beak-like structure.

Jellyfish:

  • Jellyfish exist for millions of years, even before dinosaurs lived on the earth.
  • Their mouth is found in the centre of their body.
  • Jellyfish digest their food, which consists of fish, shrimp, crabs and tiny plants, very quickly.
  • Jellyfish stings can be painful to humans and, for certain species, they can even be deadly.

Seahorse:

  • Male seahorses carry the baby during reproduction.

Starfish:

  • Starfish can regenerate their own arms.
  • They have no brain or blood.
  • They are layered with an upper skin made out of calcium carbonate. This strong material makes the skin tough and difficult for hunters to breakdown.
  • They have eyes.
  • Starfish move with hundreds of feet. They are equipped with hundreds of tiny little feet at the end of each arm.
  • Due to their tiny mouth on the underside of their body, starfish have adapted an ingenious way of eating things larger than they can fit in their mouth.

Octopus:

  • Octopuses have blue blood, not from royal genes, but from copper.
  • Octopuses also have three hearts: two just to pump blood through the gills and one more to circulate it to the organs.
  • All octopuses are venomous, although only the blue-ringed octopus of Australia is dangerous to humans.
  • Octopuses, along with squids and cuttlefishes, are masters of camouflage, meaning changing colour, brightness, pattern and even texture in a flash to hide in plain sight or advertise for a mate.
  • Octopus’s eight arms can perform separate tasks simultaneously because of a large nerve cluster, like a minibrain, at the base of each controlling its movement.

Catfish:

  • Catfish can live in very cold and very hot water.
  • Asian catfish walk from pool to pool.
  • Catfish have amazing sense of hearing. They have a weberian apparatus, which serves as an amplifier for underwater sounds.
  • The largest catfish ever caught was a mekong giant catfish that weighed 646 pounds.
  • The Asian stone mini catfish is only an inch long.
  • Catfish have thousands of taste buds located all over their bodies which help them sense where food is.
